Optimal selection of individuals for repeated covariate measurements in follow-up studies

2016

Repeated covariate measurements bring important information on the time-varying risk factors in long epidemiological follow-up studies. However, due to budget limitations, it may be possible to carry out the repeated measurements only for a subset of the cohort. We study cost-efficient alternatives for the simple random sampling in the selection of the individuals to be remeasured. The proposed selection criteria are based on forms of the D-optimality. The selection methods are compared with the simulation studies and illustrated with the data from the East–West study carried out in Finland from 1959 to 1999. The results indicate that cost savings can be achieved if the selection is focuse…

Design Issues and Sample Size when Exposure Measurement is Inaccurate

2001

AbstractMeasurement error often leads to biased estimates and incorrect tests in epidemiological studies. These problems can be corrected by design modifications which allow for refined statistical models, or in some situations by adjusted sample sizes to compensate a power reduction. The design options are mainly an additional replication or internal validation study. Sample size calculations for these designs are more complex, since usually there is no unique design solution to obtain a prespecified power. Thus, additionally to a power requirement, an optimal design should also fulfill the criteria of minimizing overall costs. In this review corresponding strategies and formulae are descr…

Experimental Study of Central Baffle Flume

2019

In this paper, the hydraulics of a central baffle flume (CBF) were experimentally studied. Extensive experimental runs were carried out to highlight the effects of different geometrical parameters such as baffle length, contraction ratio, and the length of upstream and downstream guide walls. Two different approaches, i.e., the Π theorem of dimensional analysis coupled with the incomplete self-similarity theory and the energy balance equation, were applied to deduce the stage–discharge formula of a CBF characterized by different geometrical parameters. The stage–discharge relationship deduced by the dimensional analysis approach was more accurate than that obtained by the energy approach. F…

Targeted steel frames by means of innovative moment resisting connections

2021

Abstract The present paper proposes the use of stepped cross section devices on steel frames aiming at reproducing a pre-established target push-over curve. To this aim a Limited Resistance Plastic Device (LRPD) to be inserted along selected structural members is proposed. The following two main specific features for LRPD are required: any elastic flexural stiffness variation of the original selected member must be avoided; an ultimate plastic bending moment value equal to an assigned percentage of the original limit resistance value must be ensured. Steel frames equipped with LRPD are modeled by means of an extension of a recently proposed Fibre Smart Displacement Based (FSDB) beam element…

MULTICRITERIA OPTIMAL DESIGN OF CONTINUOUS CIRCULAR PLATES

2010

The paper is devoted to a quite general version of the multicriteria optimal (minimum volume) design of axisymmetric circular plates. The constitutive material is considered as elastic perfectly plastic without any ductility limit and the actions are assumed as quasi-statically variable within a given load domain. In the design problem formulation different resistance criteria are considered, in order to investigate all the possible structural limit responses, and for each one a suitably chosen safety factor is chosen. The optimal design problem is formulated as the search for the minimum structure volume according with a statical approach. The features of the optimal structures will be stu…

Influence of protecting devices on the optimal design of elastic plastic structures

2008

The paper concerns the minimum volume design of structures constituted by elastic perfectly plastic material. The relevant optimal design problem is formulated on the grounds of a statical approach and two different resistance limits are considered: in particular, it is required that the optimal structure satisfies the elastic shakedown limit and the instantaneous collapse limit, imposing for each different condition a suitably chosen safety factor. For sake of generality, the structure is thought as discretized into compatible finite elements and subjected to loads quasi-statically acting as well as to dynamic (seismic) loads. The effects of the dynamic actions are studied on the grounds o…

Closed-form solutions of the energy balance equation for drip laterals under the Darcy-Weisbach resistance formula

2018

Many studies have investigated easy methods to design drip laterals, as well as the best resistance equation to use, which is fundamental to accurately account for friction losses. This paper addresses both the features of lateral design relationships and the influence of the friction-loss equation on the design variables. First, simple closed-form solutions of the energy balance equation for both sloped and horizontal drip laterals are derived with the simplified Darcy-Weisbach resistance formula by assuming the Darcy friction factor as invariant versus the Reynolds number. Second, an error analysis is performed assuming the friction factor as constant in the design, which is compared to u…

Numerical validation of LRPH behaviour by FEM analysis

2019

LRPH connection is a special steel device mainly usable to join beam elements of plane or spatial steel frames. It is identified as Limited Resistance Rigid Perfectly Plastic Hinge and it is covered by patent n. 102017000088597 at the Italian Ministry of Economic Development and identified in the International Patent System with the number PCT/IB2018/055766. The fundamental innovations of this device are the mutual independence of their own resistance and stiffness features and the respect of assigned constraints related to the elastic and limit behavior of the joined elements. Within the frame structural scheme, the device plays the role of a rigid perfectly plastic hinge, and it is consti…

Nontraditional configuration of tuned liquid column damper inerter for base-isolated structures

2023

In this paper, the concept of a novel passive control device, namely the Nontraditional Tuned Liquid Column Damper Inerter (NT-TLCDI), is investigated in combination with seismic base isolation (BI), to control lateral displacement demands in base-isolated structures during seismic events. The considered NT-TLCDI is a revision of the ordinary configuration of the recently proposed Tuned Liquid Column Damper Inerter (TLCDI). Unlike the traditional TLCDI layout, which involves a secondary liquid mass in a U-shaped tank coupled with a grounded inerter and connected to the isolation system by a spring-dashpot system, in the NT-TLCDI configuration, the damper is in parallel with the inerter rath…
